March 10, 2009, Tuesday,
Music Boosters Board Meeting Minutes

Submitted by Kathy Cranford, Secretary
Next meeting scheduled for April 14, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Attendance:

Michael Cummins, Jeanne Hoey, Deb Velez, Ellen Goetze, Christina Deckard, Kathy LaBelle, Kathy Cranford

The meeting began at 6:40 pm.

Budget:

Treasurer Jeanne Hoey passed out copies of the latest financial report and budget. Jeanne noted that we have a $300 credit with the company that we order awards from. We reviewed and discussed the budget, and it was approved.

Awards banquet:

The date has been changed to Wednesday, June 3rd. The reason is that the senior awards ceremony is being held on Thursday, June 4th. Ellen volunteered to make a flyer for the banquet.

Festival:

The band and orchestra will be participating in the Eastlake Music Festival on Friday, March 13th. The orchestra performs at 1:30pm and the band performs at 2:30pm.

Color guard competitions:

Winter Color Guard will be competing on March 21st (Mission Hills), April 11 (Mt. Carmel), and April 18 (location TBD). Ellen volunteered to videotape the performances.

Jazz band performances:

The jazz band will be performing on May 19th, at 4:30pm, for the Classified Employee of the Year Awards Ceremony at UCHS.

Fundraising:

Mr. Cummins said it was O.K. to advertise the discount cards. Deb Velez has been working on this fundraiser. Each student is expected to sell 5 cards for $10 each. The music program will receive 50% profit. Handouts explaining the fundraiser were distributed to the students. Jeanne is working on the Target grant application and will apply for the maximum amount of $3000. Jeanne is also working on an article for the Scroll and local newspapers about our music program. Kathy Cranford volunteered to relay the results from the Eastlake Music Festival to Jeanne for inclusion in the article. Ellen said she would check with her contact at Vons prior to the Spring Concert about donating a gift card. Deb had a suggestion for another fundraiser - selling fruit slurpees during lunchtime. A machine that makes healthy fruit slurpees can be rented for as long as we want (same contact person as the discount cards). Students would sign up to make slurpees; they would sell for $1, and the music program would receive $.50 for each drink sold. It would be great if we could get a parent volunteer to organize this fundraiser which is sure to be successful now that the weather is getting warmer. Jeanne volunteered to pass on announcements for our fundraisers to the UCHS e-mail contact.

Minutes:

The minutes from last meeting were reviewed and accepted.

Website:

We want to continue working to keep the website current especially with pictures from recent performances. Please send pictures to Jeanne Hoey (treasurer@uchsmusic.com) or to our webmaster Bonnie MacRitchie (communications@uchsmusic.com).

Announcements from Mr. Cummins:

Assembly Bill 351, which will give P.E. credit for marching band, ROTC, etc. will be voted on soon and is expected to pass. Mr. Cummins encouraged parents to send e-mails to school board members to urge them NOT to take money away from teachers in this next budget cycle. There is about $3 million in art grants that we want to KEEP in the arts programs and not have re-directed into other programs. We briefly discussed the survey at the District website.

Looking ahead:

Mr. Cummins said that next year’s music class schedule will be the same as this year’s schedule. The drumline will be performing at Standley Middle School to help recruit students into the high school music program. Now that UCHS students have been able to enroll in both music and sports for this current school year, we hope to encourage more middle school students to do the same. Band camp will be held August 31-September 4. We are in great need of a shade structure for the football bleachers when the marching band performs next fall. As many of you remember, it gets very hot for the students during the afternoon football games! Tarps can be purchased for a good price at Costco (and costs will be reimbursed by the Music Boosters); now we need some volunteers to design a structure that can be put together next fall.
